The artist who will take to the stage at Casino Sochi on 8 October has the knack of talking to a huge concert hall as if she were facing not hundreds of strangers but a very close friend. Come to see Lolita in a grand live concert at the Krasnaya Polyana Gaming Zone! Let’s be honest: Russia has lots of pop stars but how many of them have the guts to appear funny or vulnerable? Lolita Milyavskaya does this with ease, elegance, plus great dignity.
Lolita started out as Irina Ponarovskaya’s backing vocalist, studied to become a stage director and then, together with Alexander Tsekalo, created the legendary cabaret duo “Akademia”, an audacious Russian answer to ironic European pop. When the duo broke up, many people doubted Lolita’s solo career would take off. Yet she released “Flowers”, followed by the high-profile “Divorced Woman’s Show”, with hundreds of thousands of discs selling out regularly during tours of Russia. Forbes even named Lolita among Russia’s richest artists, even though the singer herself invariably treats such titles with self-deprecating irony.
Lolita’s concerts are never just a string of hits from radio station rotations. She always offers her audiences several hours of true emotional therapy, with laughter suddenly giving way to tears. One moment the audience freezes, transfixed by a piercing version of a Tsvetaeva poem or by the dramatic “Ranevskaya”; the next moment, everybody breaks into dance to the tune of “Stiletto Heel” or “Champagne”.
